Crowns cover the visible portion of the tooth – also known as the cusp – and can be used to restore teeth that have become damaged in this area in some way. Crowns can restore full function to teeth while also helping to restore the aesthetic appearance of the mouth.
Crowns are used to repair and restore teeth that have become damaged at the cusp. This damage is most often caused by decay which can weaken the structure of the tooth, or from an injury or accident to the face. We also use crowns when placing dental bridges, as well as to restore full function after performing a root canal treatment. In some cases, patients might choose to have a crown placed to address cosmetic issues such as discolouration of the tooth, a misshapen tooth, or a broken tooth.
In the past, most crowns were made from precious metals such as gold. Now, we’re able to create crowns from modern materials that are better able to fit in with the rest of the teeth and mouth, such as porcelain or Zirconia.
Having a crown placed usually occurs over two appointments.
