When left untreated, tooth decay can lead to infection in the interior of the tooth – also known as the dental pulp – resulting in the need for a root canal treatment.

Infection of the dental pulp can be both very painful and uncomfortable for the patient and, if left untreated, dangerous for the overall oral health of the mouth as it can lead to abscesses, a loose tooth, and even the loss or extraction of a tooth.

What is a root canal treatment?

The chances are you’ve already heard of root canal treatments. Unfortunately, they have something of a ‘bad’ reputation among patients, but with modern techniques and technology, and our team’s gentle approach and experience, root canal treatments are nothing to fear.

Designed to treat and remove infection at the interior of the tooth, root canal treatments are performed by expert endodontists, who remove the infection and seal the tooth back up again to prevent any further infection from occurring.

How will I know if I need a root canal treatment?

As mentioned, infection of the dental pulp can cause pain and sensitivity in the patient with symptoms including:

  • Increased sensitivity especially to hot or cold food and drinks
  • Swelling of the face
  • Change in gum colour to a dusky purple
  • Change in tooth colour to grey/black (in advanced cases)
  • Abscess (in advanced cases)
  • Loose tooth (in advanced cases)

How long is the treatment?

Most root canal treatments are performed over two appointments. In some cases, we may need just one appointment to carry out the treatment, while more advanced cases could require three appointments.

What happens during the treatment?

  1. Local anaesthetic is applied so you’re comfortable throughout
  2. Using a microscope, the infected pulp is removed and the pulp chamber is thoroughly cleaned
  3. The filling material is applied and expertly shaped to prevent re-infection

Will I need a crown?

Some patients may also require the application of a crown to ensure the tooth has been fully restored. This will depend on the extent of damage present.

What should I expect after the treatment?

Any pain or sensitivity you were experiencing due to the infection should be completely eliminated, although you will experience some pain and tenderness at the site of the treatment. This can usually be effectively treated with over-the-counter medication such as paracetamol or ibuprofen. If necessary, you may also have to return to the practice to receive your crown.
